Itata is one of South America's most thrilling rediscoveries: a historic Chilean valley of ancient bush vines on pure granite, and Rogue Vine, the project of Leonardo Erazo and Justin Decker, is at the heart of its revival. The Grand Itata Blanco is a field blend off old vines (some planted in 1922) of Moscatel, Riesling, Semillon and the local Chasselas they call Corinto. Fermented in concrete with lees and a bit of skin contact, native yeast and minimal sulfur, it's honest, low-alcohol and bursting with character. The 2024 is vibrant and saline, a wine of real place.

"The 2024 Blanco Gran Itata (Tank Sample) combines Moscatel, Sémillon and Riesling. It’s a Muscat-dominant white with herbal character from the early-picked Sémillon and a touch of apple. Direct and slightly grippy, with a chalky texture and moderate freshness, this recalls traditional table whites in its tactile, frank palate." —Joaquín Hidalgo

More about Rogue Vine

First and foremost, the wines from Rogue Vine are meant to express the true character of the Itata Valley. Itata was the center of viticulture in Chile in the early colonial period. As winemaking modernized and commercialized in the 20th century, the region was largely abandoned due to the difficult hilly landscape. Today the area is home to tiny plots of old vines that are randomly dispersed and often far from each other: an industrial winery’s nightmare.

But for those who like “real” wine, this setup is a dream! Microclimates abound in the mountainous terrain and the 60- to 300+-year-old bush vines (yep, that’s not a typo) seem to be almost falling down the steep gravel hillsides. Leonardo Erazo Lynch and his partner Justin Decker knew the potential when they first saw these unkempt plots.

Their winemaking is simple, as it should be: native yeast, neutral old oak, no “correcting” techniques and minimal sulfur at bottling. What you get in the bottle is the straight liquid essence of this incredible region, exalted vales of minerality gently dusted with rolling glades of wild herbs and brambly thickets of flowers. A vinous trek worth taking!

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

45% Moscatel, 30% Riesling, and 25% Semillon from a blend of old vines in Guarilihue, Itata; the vines date back to the early 1920's in Paleozoic granite soils. Hand-harvested fruit. After gentle crushing in a basket press, the must is fermented at cold temperatures with native yeast. Aged in neutral oak, then in bottle for three months before release.
