Breuer calls Terra Montosa their "baby grand cru"—a dry Riesling blended each year from the estate's steepest grand cru slopes, from the Rudesheimer Berg to Rauenthal's Nonnenberg. But this particular bottling carries a twist: "Patientia," Latin for patience. After the famously cold 2021 vintage, the estate held a portion back for roughly three extra years of maturation before release, letting it develop toasty complexity and depth you don't usually find in a wine at this level. It's the multi-slope Terra Montosa—crystalline, mineral, bone-dry—but with the added dimension that only real cellar time can give. A patient wine, rewarded.

More about Georg Breuer

Georg Breuer is one of the estates that made the case for dry Rheingau Riesling, and its steep grand cru sites above the Rhine at Rüdesheim produce some of the most sought-after, and slowest to open, Rieslings in Germany.

The estate dates to 1880 and was bought by Peter Breuer in the early twentieth century; his son Georg gave it his name. Georg's son Bernhard made it famous. In the 1980s he was a leading figure in Charta, the group that pushed the Rheingau back toward dry wines and argued for a vineyard classification based on geology. When Bernhard died suddenly in 2004, his daughter Theresa, just 20, took over, and she has since added vineyards in cool Lorch, built a new cellar in Rüdesheim and farms organically.

The heart of the estate is Rüdesheim's Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck and Berg Rottland, steep slopes of slate, quartzite and phyllite, along with the Nonnenberg in Rauenthal, a monopole at the other end of the Rheingau. Fermentations are spontaneous and the top wines age in large, neutral casks. Terra Montosa, a blend from the steep sites, is the estate's "baby grand cru," and there is a little Pinot Noir too. The wines are bone dry, crystalline and tightly wound when young; give them time.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
