This is a white you can't find anywhere else: it's built partly on Sercialinho, a rare cross of Madeira's Sercial and Alvarinho that only the Pato family grows. Luis Pato made his name taming Baga, Bairrada's notoriously tannic red grape, but we think the family's whites are just as compelling, and this old-vine bottling is the place to start. Sercialinho is blended here with Bical and Cercial. The family works two very different kinds of ground. At Vinha Formal in Óis do Bairro, Bical grows on very chalky, alkaline soil that gives wines of mineral purity and incisive acidity. At Quinta do Ribeirinho, the ancestral estate further west, the soils turn sandy near the coast and delay ripening, which usually means low alcohol and very high acidity. The Patos have been making wine at Ribeirinho since at least the 18th century, and when Bairrada became a DOC in 1970, Luis's father João was the first producer to bottle under the new name. If your idea of Portuguese white begins and ends with light, easy sippers, this is a serious and very affordable way to change it.

More about Luis Pato

Luis Pato trained as a chemical engineer before taking over his father's winery in the early 1980s. He then revolutionized Bairrada winemaking by destemming Baga and aging in new oak—radical, considered, precise. His Vinha Pan, Vinha Barrosa, and the remarkable Pé Franco from ungrafted vines are some of Portugal's greatest reds.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams with garlic, olive oil and cilantro); grilled sardines with lemon; bacalhau à Brás; octopus salad with olive oil and parsley; fresh goat cheese with herbs.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, mineral-driven Bairrada white: lemon, green apple and white peach with savoury herbal notes and a chalky, saline edge. Typically light to medium-bodied and fairly low in alcohol, it carries sharp, mouthwatering acidity through to a long, clean finish. Think of it as closer to a crisp Chablis than to an easygoing Portuguese sipper.
