The NY Times' Wirecutter says: Produced by Carlos Camarena at La Alteña distillery, where Tapatío is also made, El Tesoro means treasure in Spanish—a title that matches this exceptional tequila, which first debuted in 1990. Wet grass, black peppercorn, and dulce de leche lead the aromas. And flavor-wise, the medium-bodied tequila conjures prickly pear, basil, and desert pine. I love the volcanic-soil qualities that come through prominently on the finish, which lingers and dries out the palate in a smooth way. Prior to this tasting, El Tesoro was also one of my everyday standbys, and this brand-concealed tasting solidified that status.

El Tesoro traces its story back to the Camarena family, who've been growing agave in Jalisco since the early 1800s and landed in the modern tequila business in 1990. Made at La Alteña distillery using a tahona wheel and copper stills, these tequilas honor the traditional way Don Felipe Camarena made them over eighty years ago—slow, methodical, and true.
