The 2021 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Premier Cru “Clos des Ducs” is a stunning expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most cherished monopole vineyards. Owned exclusively by Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, “Clos des Ducs” is a revered site in Volnay, known for its limestone-rich soils and ideal exposure. This vineyard consistently produces wines of remarkable precision, elegance, and complexity, epitomizing the grace of Volnay’s finest terroirs.

In the glass, the wine reveals a radiant ruby hue. The nose is layered and sophisticated, offering aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries, interwoven with floral notes of violets and hints of spice, such as cinnamon and clove. Subtle earthy undertones and a whisper of minerality add depth. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and impeccably balanced, with silky tannins and lively acidity framing a core of vibrant red fruit flavors. The wine’s texture is refined and smooth, leading to a long, graceful finish with lingering notes of herbs, spice, and chalky minerality.

The 2021 vintage, marked by cooler conditions, brings a remarkable freshness and clarity to this wine, emphasizing its focus and elegance. While already compelling in its youth for its aromatic complexity and polished structure, “Clos des Ducs” has the depth and finesse to evolve gracefully over the next 15–20 years, revealing further layers of nuance with time. This wine pairs beautifully with roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, or wild mushroom dishes.

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s “Clos des Ducs” is a benchmark for Volnay, offering a harmonious blend of power and refinement, and it continues to be a must-have for Burgundy collectors and enthusiasts.

Burghound

"A slightly more restrained nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of red currant, floral, spice and vaguely garrigue-like wisps. There is outstanding intensity to the slightly bigger and more powerful yet still gorgeously textured flavors that also exhibit a borderline pungent minerality that seems to build on the compact, serious and youthfully austere finish that displays stunningly good length. As is virtually always the case with Clos des Ducs, extended patience will absolutely be necessary."

"The 2021 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, whose illustrious pedigree did not preclude it from frost damage, nevertheless has a distinctive nose that seems anomalous to d'Angerville's other crus: darker fruit, much more marine-influenced, to the point where you would imagine there might be stems (it is 100% de-stemmed like the other crus). The palate is very well structured, edgier than the Champans, more saline with modest grip towards the slightly saturnine finish. This will require 3-4 years in bottle. Excellent, somehow a bit…enigmatic." -Vinous

"The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is more reserved than the Champans, unwinding to reveal scents of plums, wild berries, vine smoke, spices and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with powdery tannins and excellent depth at the core, it's bright and perfumed, concluding with a long, saline finish." -Robert Parker

"Monopole. Quite an array of fruit and floral flavours here. With great concentration – but no obvious sweetness. Firm and rather majestic but also a bit monastic at the moment! Tannins are beautiful but definitely there."

"The great savoury depth of the ’21 Clos des Ducs is immensely appealing. The initial impression is ripe plummy fruit with notes of earth and spice along with a bit of reduction as well that should disappear on racking. The texture has concentration and elegance; the ripe fruit character comes through on the palate, balanced by fresh acidity that drives the wine to a lengthy finish. The grapes from the 2.15-hectare monopole are destemmed and carefully fermented before ageing in cask (20% new)."

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
