Domaine de Cristia’s 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Classic is everything you want in a southern Rhône red—ripe, rich, and wildly satisfying, with a lift and elegance that make it more than just muscle.

This cuvée is built around old-vine Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding depth, structure, and spice. The fruit leans dark—blackberries, cherries, and dried figs—wrapped in garrigue herbs, cracked pepper, and a whisper of warm earth. The tannins are plush and well-integrated, making it approachable now but with plenty of backbone for aging.

Cristia farms organically and vinifies with a light touch, allowing the terroir to shine through all that southern sun. It’s classic Châteauneuf flavor, but with sleekness and polish that keeps things fresh.

Perfect for: grilled lamb, hearty stews, roast vegetables, or just cozy nights in when only a big red will do.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ranks alongside the finest renditions of this wine ever produced at Domaine de Cristia. Bursting with orange blossom, garrigue, red cherry, strawberry and licorice, it strikes the perfect balance between opulence and freshness. Polished tannins, a seamless mouthfeel and a focused, juicy conclusion round it all up." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

92 points

"Crafted from vines planted on sandy soils, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Domaine de Cristia has a vibrant, elegant bouquet of dark cherries, berries, rose, violet and lilac mingled with fresh thyme notes. Medium to full-bodied, pure and clean, it has an ample and fleshy core of fruit, suave texture and polished tannins. Comprising 85% Grenache Noir and 15% Syrah and matured for 18 months in both wooden and concrete tanks, this authentic Chateauneuf-du-Pape is worth seeking out." —Yohan Castaing

Decanter

93 points

"Impressively expressive, with melted down berry fruits infused with herbs – really fruity and ripe, but all well controlled and focused, with fine tannins. A lively and vibrant Tradition cuvée that should be great value for money. Mostly aged in concrete tank, with 15% in foudres." —Matt Walls

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Velvety and seductive, with smoothly polished tannins holding up ripe red currant and cherry flavors edged in iron and baking spices. A bitter cherry pit note at the end contributes to the focused, dry finish, which stretches out. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre."

More about Domaine de Cristia

Domaine de Cristia sits on the quieter, eastern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in Courthézon, where sandy soils and cool exposures give Grenache more lift and perfume than the appellation's reputation for power might suggest.

Étienne Grangeon started the estate in the 1950s with two hectares of Grenache. His son Alain joined in 1963, expanded the holdings and planted Syrah and Mourvèdre, and in 1999 Alain's sons Baptiste and Dominique came on board, focusing on the best parcels and on wines built to age. Today the family farms about 42 hectares, 19 of them in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the rest in Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages and Vin de Pays, nearly all around Courthézon.

Most of the Châteauneuf vines grow in the lieu-dit Cristia itself, on northeast-facing sand that brings freshness and supple, fine tannins. A parcel in l'Arnesque, covered in the river's rolled pebbles, adds warmth and ripeness. Plantings are about 85% Grenache. The estate has been certified organic since the 2008 harvest. In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and fermented for around three weeks in concrete with gentle extraction, and the Châteauneuf reds then age for 18 months in vat and barrel.

The range runs from juicy Côtes du Rhône to old-vine Châteauneuf of real depth. Expect generous fruit, freshness and finesse rather than heat.

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

The “Classic” has a distinctive floral component and is a pretty wine, at the same time, it captures the power and spice you expect from a classic Châteauneuf. The vines average 50 years-old and are grown in a sandy loam and clay soil. The blend is 75% Grenache aged in concrete, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre aged in barrels. Aged for 18 months.
