This is the easy way into Rhys, the Santa Cruz Mountains estate that made hard-core Burgundy lovers take California Pinot Noir seriously. Rhys doesn't do it by imitating Burgundy. It chases the same elegance by farming in the mountains. Kevin Harvey, a software entrepreneur obsessed with Burgundy, founded the estate in 2004 to prove that California mountain vineyards could make world-class wine, and it all started with 35 Pinot Noir vines planted behind his home. The cellar approach is hands-off: the wine is moved gently by gravity in a 30,000-square-foot cave, a high share of whole clusters is crushed by foot, and the Pinots age in Burgundy barrels with restrained new oak. The single-vineyard bottlings each show off one site. This appellation-level Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot shows the house style as a whole, and it's a lower-commitment way to find out what the fuss is about.

Roast duck breast with cherry sauce, wild mushroom risotto, cedar-plank salmon, coq au vin, or roast chicken with thyme and shallots.

Tasting Profile

Expect a lighter-framed, savoury mountain Pinot Noir: red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry, with a spicy, stemmy lift from the whole clusters and a touch of forest floor. Bright acidity and fine, silky tannins keep it taut, with oak kept in the background, finishing long and fresh. Think red Burgundy rather than plush California Pinot.
