Once known for Montalcino's darkest, most muscular Brunellos, Valdicava has evolved thrillingly under the obsessive, organic guidance of Vincenzo Abbruzzese, moving toward purity and aromatic lift. Madonna del Piano is the estate's crown jewel, one of the very first single-vineyard Brunellos ever made and a wine that set the standard for the category. Bottled only in the best vintages as a Riserva, it's 100% Sangiovese given extended aging. The 2010, from a legendary Brunello vintage, is a powerful yet refined wine built for the long haul. Decant generously.
