Geoffroy, Empreinte Millesime Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru Extra Brut, 2018

A vintage Blanc de Noirs from a grower who won't let Cumières Pinot Noir go soft: barrel-fermented, no malolactic fermentation, and 66 months on the lees before release. The 2018 is 100% Pinot Noir from three midslope plots in Cumières, a Premier Cru village in Champagne's Vallée de la Marne. Skipping malo is a house signature, and it gives these wines a nerve and ageing potential that most Cumières Champagnes lack. Pair that tension with fermentation and ageing in demi-muids and barrels and an Extra Brut finish, and you get a Champagne with both weight and backbone. Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, the fifth generation of his family to farm here, works the vines with his father René. More than five years on the lees has already added real depth, but the wine has the structure to keep developing. Open one now and put another away.

Tasting Profile

Expect the richer, red-fruited side of Champagne: ripe red apple, cherry and a hint of raspberry, layered with brioche and toasty, nutty notes from barrel fermentation and long lees ageing. The palate is typically weighty yet taut, with a fine, persistent mousse, and skipping malolactic keeps the acidity bright. Finishes bone-dry, mineral and long.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
