The d'Angerville family describes Taillepieds as a little more serious and reserved than its other Volnays, especially when young, a wine that often needs extra years in bottle to open its bouquet. That's why a 2008 is the one to look for. The name means "foot-cutter," because the climat is covered in sharp-edged stones that wore out the vignerons' shoes fast. The domaine's 1.07-hectare parcel sits at the very top of the Volnay slope on the village's south hill, with only a strip of village Volnay between it and the woods. The soil is poor, whitish and rocky, and the slope faces south-east. The family credits the steep slope, the thin soil and the especially sunny exposure for the wine's finesse. They credit the high elevation for its serious streak: in their view it's racy, and a bit more complete and powerful than their Champans or Caillerets. The 2008 was made partway through the domaine's conversion to biodynamics, which started in 2006 and finished in 2009. Yields stay low partly thanks to "Pinot d'Angerville," a fine, low-yielding vine selection that Sem and Jacques d'Angerville developed in the early 1950s.

"From 35+ year old vines. his is a classic Taillepieds with is very cool and restrained nose of chalk, stone and airy red berry fruit aromas that are very much in keeping with the wispy, lacy and dancing medium-bodied flavors that possess a superb sense of underlying tension on the gorgeously precise, explosive and mineral suffused finish, which is, in the fashion of a fine Taillepieds, notably austere. This will require time." —Allen Meadows

"Medium red. Sexy perfume of red cherry and rose petal. Silky on entry, then firm and tight in the middle, with vibrant acidity accentuating the wine's purity. There's a minerality here that reminded me of a Chambolle. This pristine, sharply focused beauty builds on the back end, finishing with outstanding subtle persistence." —Stephen Tanzer

"A meld of fresh blackberry with red currant and red raspberry is tinged with cinnamon and shadowed by black tea smokiness in the nose of d’Angerville’s 2008 Volnay Taillepieds. Here we have grip and almost electric brightness and energy allied to vivid fresh red berries as well as a complex undertone of forest floor, mushroom stock, and beef broth. Tartness of berry skin; smoky, pungent black tea and Szechuan pepper; and chalky, saline and peaty notes, make for a dramatic finishing flourish. This finely-structured Volnay should be worth following for 12-15 years at least." —David Schildknecht

"Lively and tense and racy. Lovely stuff and I believe that the future will be even better. Long." —Jancis Robinson

"The cherry, raspberry and mineral flavors are precise and persistent, courtesy of the firm structure and refined tannins. Everything is there, but this is taut and needs time to relax."

More about Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or duck breast, rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison loin with a red wine reduction, or a wild mushroom and beef pie. Coq au vin and a plate of aged Comté would also work well.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay profile with a firmer edge: red cherry, raspberry and violet, with earthy, stony notes underneath. Typically medium-bodied and racy, with bright acidity and fine but firm tannins. It tends to be more reserved than most Volnay when young and rewards time in bottle, finishing long, savoury and mineral.
