Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from two of the people who did most to define it, made deliberately quieter. Ivan Sutherland and James Healy met at Cloudy Bay, Sutherland in the vineyards and Healy in the cellar, and struck out on their own in 2004 with Dog Point, on land Sutherland had first planted in the late 1970s where the Brancott and Omaka valleys meet. It is now the largest certified organic vineyard in New Zealand, and every grape is hand-picked at yields of around 50 hl/ha - genuinely unusual in Marlborough - then whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel. What comes out is recognizably Marlborough but more textural and less shouty: citrus, herb and salt in place of the passionfruit blast. The name, incidentally, comes from the settler-era sheepdogs that went feral in these hills and turned on the flocks they were meant to guard.

Antonio Galloni

"Like a blinkered horse, the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc moves in a straight line with purpose. While the nose is a little tight with a reductive scent of struck match, the palate reveals elderflower, green capsicum, lemon and lime. A decant would really help this if you're planning to drink it in its youth, as it's currently in an edgy straitjacket of infancy. Dry and firm, the 2025 needs another 6-12 months in bottle to soften its angles. The finish fades a little quickly." —Rebecca Gibb MW

Robert Parker

"The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc is textural and salty, savory and complex. I love this wine for its tether to place, but its elevation beyond it. It isn't overt in its styling, nor pungent in its aromas; it is classy—a sophisticated showing of the best attributes of the variety. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."

Wine Spectator

"Complex and highly detailed, with notes of honeysuckle and lemon oil, plus touches of saline and grilled Meyer lemon. Yuzu, pomelo and citron flavors, along with lemongrass and fresh ginger, linger effortlessly on a sleek, mouthwatering frame. Drink now through 2036."

More about Dog Point Vineyard

Dog Point is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from two of the people who helped define it, made with a restraint the region's big brands rarely bother with.

Ivan Sutherland and James Healy worked together at Cloudy Bay, Ivan as viticulturist and James as winemaker. With their wives, Margaret and Wendy, they struck out on their own, making their first Dog Point wines from the 2002 vintage. The vineyard sits where the Brancott and Omaka valleys meet in Marlborough's Southern Valleys, close to where the region's first vines were planted, and the name recalls the shepherds and sheepdogs of the valley's nineteenth-century farming days. Farmed organically since 2009, it is the largest certified organic vineyard in New Zealand. James Healy died in early 2026; the Sutherlands' son Matt manages the business.

Every grape is picked by hand, which is rare in a region built on machine harvesting. The range is short: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, plus Section 94, a single-parcel Sauvignon named for the vineyard's number in the original colonial survey, fermented with native yeasts and aged for about 18 months in old barrels.

Expect Marlborough with more texture and less shouting: citrus, herbs and salt rather than a blast of passion fruit.
