A 375ml bottle of Grüner Veltliner from the oldest wine estate in the Kamptal holds just the right amount for a weeknight dinner for one, or a glass each before you open a red. This is Schloss Gobelsburg's village wine, made from several vineyards around the village of Gobelsburg itself, where the vines grow on loess, a fine wind-blown silt. The house keeps things careful but simple: grapes are picked by hand, carried to the cellar in small boxes and pressed gently, and this wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel, so nothing gets in the way of the fruit. There's plenty of history behind it, too. Cistercian monks were given the estate's first vineyards in 1171, and Eva and Michael Moosbrugger have run the place since 1996. It's honest, unfussy Austrian white for the dinner table, and you don't have to finish a full bottle.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Gobelsburg is the new village wine. The fruit is grown chiefly on loess, but also on alluvial soils from a former Danubian riverbed. Green and yellow pear with a slight touch of apricot appear on the tender nose. The palate is light and alive, with a spray of white pepper across its slender, smooth body. This tingles deliciously." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Gobelsburg

Schloss Gobelsburg is literally the oldest winery in the Danube region, dating to 1171. Located in the Kamptal near Vienna, it's been held by Cistercian monks since 1740 and operated since 1996 by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. Karen MacNeil calls it 'one of the great wine estates of the world.' They make Rieslings that are mineral-driven, stone-fruited, and utterly classical from vineyards like Gaisberg and Heiligenstein. This is tradition with real depth.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Kamptal Grüner profile: green apple, pear and lemon zest with the grape's signature white-pepper spice. Steel-fermented and grown on loess, it typically shows a light-to-medium body, a gently rounded texture and lively acidity, finishing dry, crisp and peppery. Think of it as a fresh, food-friendly alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.
