Julia Burke Freytsis, DWSET, has been a Cabernet Franc lover since day one of her wine industry career nearly 20 years ago. For the very first time, she's leaning into the bias and putting her all-time favorite grape in the Flatiron Wine School spotlight with a killer lineup. Cab Franc often gets sidelined into Daniel Baldwin territory, when really it's the Stellan Skarsgård to Cabernet Sauvignon's Alexander, and it's time we talked about it.

We'll look at the ageworthy power of Cab Franc, its complex layers, and its beautiful structure, as well as its ability to express terroir around the world. If you love Cab Franc, this class is for you. And if you aren't yet convinced, Julia is up to the challenge.

Meet your instructor

Julia Burke Freytsis

Julia has been working in the wine industry since 2008, when she wandered into a small Niagara Escarpment winery for a tasting and left with a job. Her roles since then have included wine (and beer) writer and editor, vineyard worker in Southern Wisconsin, retail buyer in Chicago, harvest intern in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and communications/education manager for Willamette Valley Wine. She is now Flatiron's events manager and buyer for New World wines. 

A passionate educator, Julia has been teaching classes, seminars, private events and tutoring sessions on wine for over a decade. She is a certified WSET instructor and holds a WSET Diploma in Wine & Spirits as well as an Italian Wine Professional certification. Julia believes in the power of wine to facilitate important conversations about sustainability, agriculture, labor, memory and psychology, and she has never fallen out of love with wine's ability to combine topics from geography and microbiology to language, politics and history in unexpected ways.

Three of us visited Cathy Corison in Napa Valley this fall and had a spectacular tasting at a table set out among the vines. The back-vintage Napa Cabs (including mature Kronos!) were almost to good to believe and tasted like the sunshine and the land around us. Cab has never seemed so delicious and also of its place.  

But when it came time to head to lunch, the wine we needed to go with the spread we built ourselves at the Oakville Grocer (iykyk) wasn’t one of her famous reds, but an almost unknown white, the bone dry “Corazon” Gewurztraminer.

It's actually two guys: Peter and Max are the names of the growers whose fruit went into the first vintage of this wine, a multi-vineyard blend that's meant to encapsulate everything good about South Africa's misty, cold Walker Bay region and its coastal neighbors. There's also Peter as in winemaker Peter-Allen Finlayson, who founded Crystallum in partnership with his brother Andrew.

When Rebecca Gibb, MW, tasted Joguet’s single vineyard 2019 Chinons she couldn’t help but wax poetic. They’re the kind of wines that do that to even the most technically adept tasters. They’re also wines that get high points and that can age for decades.

And yet, Chinon (generally) and Joguet (specifically) remain a bit of an insider’s wine. Charles Joguet may be one of the appellation’s benchmark producers, and an early proponent of both single vineyard Chinon as well as organic farming.
