It has undergone a revolution: once dominated by big brands obsessed with consistency — even predictability — it is now home to countless small producers carefully cultivating tiny holdings that often look more like gardens than traditional vineyards. These small growers, spread across Champagne's varied terroirs, are working tirelessly, each in their own diverse style, to explore and express those terroirs through single-village and even single-vineyard bottlings.

And great things are happening among the big houses too. Inspired, no doubt, by the growers, many of the Grandes Marques are making better wines than ever — focusing on top-quality farming (including, often, organic and biodynamic practices) and producing distinct, expressive wines that stay true to their house style. So while we'll be focusing more on up-and-coming growers, we wouldn't want to miss out on the great wines coming from the most devoted Grandes Marques.
