A single-vineyard Pinot Bianco meant to prove that Weissburgunder from Eppan belongs in serious company — and it makes the case. In der Låmm is a steep, west-facing site at 500 meters above Eppan, on moraine soils left by the last ice age and shot through with mineral-rich quartz porphyry, which is where the wine's racy, stony drive comes from. The vines date to around 1958–1962, planted by Martin Abraham's grandfather Johann and worked by his father Karl; they're pergola-trained, and the half-shade of that canopy gives small berries with real complexity rather than sunburnt weight. Marlies and Martin Abraham sold their fruit to the Eppan co-op until 2011, then struck out on their own, largely teaching themselves by doing — the vineyards are certified organic, with some biodynamic practice alongside. They now select and propagate their own plant material from those old vines, which is about as committed as a small estate gets to one piece of ground.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with orchard fruit — pear, yellow apple — plus a little citrus. Bright acidity and a firm, stony mineral streak carry it, and the finish is long and clean rather than rich.
