Spatburgunder is Pinot Noir, and this is the village-level, everyday bottling from Simone Adams, a superb entry point to her biodynamic reds. Ingelheim, in the far north of Rheinhessen, has a long and serious history with Pinot Noir on its limestone soils. Adams keeps the winemaking gentle and low-intervention, so this drinks bright, fresh, and unforced. A great weeknight German Pinot with more personality than the price suggests.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Spätburgunder Ingelheim is from Westerberg and Mainzer Berg, on opposite sides of the Selz Valley. This was made with 30% whole bunches in the ferment. A gorgeously tart morello cherry note on the nose is laced with white pepper. This is so lifted and enticing. The palate is beautifully translucent in every sense, with the finest, tenderest yet still slightly crunchy tannins. This is a poetic, cool-aspect German Pinot Noir of immense finesse." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

92 points

"Fermented with 30% whole clusters, the bright crimson-colored 2023 Ingelheim Spätburgunder offers a pretty Burgundian nose of fresh red berries, cherries, redcurrants, crushed stones, tobacco and spices. This has a fragrant, fresh and irresistible Pinot nose! Vinified in stücks and 1,800-liter oak vats, this is a light and silky, very elegant and refined Pinot with delicate, palate-cleansing tannins, savoriness, fine, tart grip and a saline and pure finish. It's a fabulous wine. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
