Alex Foillard carries one of Beaujolais' most famous surnames — his father is Jean Foillard, an original member of Kermit Lynch's legendary "Gang of Four" who reintroduced the world to living, no-makeup cru Beaujolais. Alex now farms his own plots and makes wine in the same natural spirit, and his Brouilly is both serious and simple: lush, juicy Gamay shot through with refreshing minerality. This is the thrill of a vibrant, hand-farmed Beaujolais that drinks like pure joy. Pour it with a slight chill and watch it disappear.

"The 2024 Brouilly, which comes from 90-year-old vines on schist and granite soils, has a bright bouquet with slightly tart red cherry and strawberry fruit. Well defined and focused, with a touch of cracked pepper. The palate is fresh and vibrant. Not powerful, but open-knit, with a hint of Japanese nori that pops up on the elegant finish. What they call "a grower"." —Neal Martin

More about Alex Foillard

Alex Foillard is part of the younger generation reshaping Beaujolais, armed with a proper education in viticulture and enology from Beaune. The son of natural winemaking pioneer Jean Foillard, Alex brought his own vineyards into the mix—parcels in Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly—broadening the family's palette beyond their Morgon heritage. He works whole-cluster fermentation with natural yeasts and zero additives, producing Gamay that's both serious and simple: lush fruit, refreshing minerality, the kind of wine that tastes like it knew what it was from the start.
