The Knoll—a small sandstone hill on Seneca Lake's western shore—has produced some of the Finger Lakes' most compelling Rieslings, and now its longtime steward has his own label. Kelby James Russell built his reputation crafting wines from this very site at Red Newt Cellars over more than a decade; in 2023, he and partner Julia Rose Hoyle purchased the nearly 20-acre Lahoma Vineyard to launch Apollo's Praise. The 2024 inaugural vintage underwent five days of cold soaking on crushed skins, then four months of native yeast fermentation in small tanks, yielding a wine of startling concentration—gunflint, white pepper, and tropical fruit layered over the Finger Lakes' signature minerality. Just 4 g/L residual sugar provides barely perceptible sweetness against the wine's driving acidity.

More about Apollo's Praise

Kelby James Russell and Julia Rose Hoyle established Apollo's Praise in 2023 with the purchase of the Lahoma Vineyard on the west side of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. The vineyard's sandstone soils are uncommon in the region and lend their Rieslings a real opulence and ripe generosity that stands out in any lineup. Both winemakers have deep experience in the region, and their vision is to make wines that honor terroir-driven expression. This is still early, but the potential here is genuine.
