Clos Nouveau is the oldest parcel in the village of Benais, and it gives the most serious Cabernet Franc at a domaine that already makes some of Bourgueil's most convincing wines. Pierre Gauthier founded the estate in 1979, converted to certified organic farming in 2000, and was joined by his son Rodolphe in 2005; yields are held under 40 hl/ha, everything is hand-picked, the fruit is fully destemmed, and fermentations run long on native yeasts in cellars carved into the vineyard rock. The soils here are silica over clay, which is what gives the wine its chalky, mineral grip. 2015 was a warm, ripe, generous Loire vintage, one of the best of its decade for Cabernet Franc, and this bottle has spent a decade turning that ripeness into something savory and fine. In magnum it has aged more slowly still, which makes this a great bottle to put on a table of six.
