Benoît Déhu’s Champagne “La Rue des Noyers” Brut Nature NV, based on the 2019 vintage, stands as a bold, terroir-driven expression of Pinot Meunier from the Marne Valley. Grown in the single vineyard of the same name, “La Rue des Noyers,” this Champagne reflects Déhu’s deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking. By fermenting and aging the wine in oak barrels, Déhu enhances its natural complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit, resulting in a Champagne that is both intense and finely detailed.

On the nose, “La Rue des Noyers” offers a captivating bouquet of red berries, orchard fruits, and a hint of spice, complemented by earthy and floral notes. The Brut Nature style, with no added dosage, accentuates the wine’s vibrant acidity and distinct minerality, giving it a focused, dry profile. On the palate, flavors of apple, pear, and citrus zest unfold with a creamy texture and fine mousse, underscored by a chalky, saline finish that speaks to the vineyard’s unique soils.

This Champagne pairs beautifully with seafood dishes like oysters and scallops, as well as more savory fare, such as charcuterie or earthy vegetable dishes. The 2019 base vintage provides structure and depth, while Déhu’s meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking ensures a Champagne that is pure, precise, and deeply expressive of its origins.

More about Benoit Dehu

Benoit is a Meunier specialist, working his family's vineyards on the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. Starting in 2011, he started bottling wines under his own name from a single parcel called La Rue des Noyers -- 100% Pinot Meunier, farmed biodynamically, and ploughed mostly by horse. In 2015, he started blending some of this PM with Pinot Noir from a nearby plot, and calls it Initiation.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
