Meunier taken as seriously as anyone in Champagne takes it, from a single parcel on the western edge of the Vallee de la Marne. Benoit Dehu trained at Bollinger before returning to his family's domaine in Fossoy, where he peeled off 1.7 hectares of his favorite Meunier vines to bottle under his own name, farmed biodynamically with roughly a quarter of it ploughed by horse. La Rue des Noyers, the walnut-tree road, is a site he has bottled as its own cuvee since 2011; it is planted entirely to Meunier and vinified in oak barrels, many of them coopered from trees in the neighboring Fossoy forest. This 2020 was bottled with zero dosage and disgorged in March 2025, so there is no sugar to hide behind, just fruit, chalk and texture. Dehu's total output runs under 4,000 bottles a year, and this drinks like white Burgundy with bubbles, so skip the flute and use a proper wine glass.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2020 Brut Nature La Rue des Noyers, 100% Meunier, is brisk and nicely delineated. Pear, white flowers, chalk, mint and dried herbs all take shape in the glass. The 2020 offers good energy, but the vegetal side of the year is impossible to escape. Bottled with no dosage. Disgorged: March 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year." —Antonio Galloni

More about Benoit Dehu

Benoit is a Meunier specialist, working his family's vineyards on the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. Starting in 2011, he started bottling wines under his own name from a single parcel called La Rue des Noyers -- 100% Pinot Meunier, farmed biodynamically, and ploughed mostly by horse. In 2015, he started blending some of this PM with Pinot Noir from a nearby plot, and calls it Initiation.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
