Malterdingen is the village that built Bernhard Huber's reputation, and this single-village Spätburgunder is the wine that proves why the terroir matters here. Julian Huber farms these vines organically, working with old parcels on limestone and loess soils that deliver depth and grip alongside the estate's signature floral refinement. The Malterdingen bottling sits above the Breisgau in the hierarchy — more specific, more mineral, more structured. It deserves a few years in the cellar but already shows its potential. This is German Pinot that earns genuine reverence.

Robert Parker

89 points

"Based on French genetics, aged in 30% new barrels and bottled in May this year, Huber's 2023 Malterdingen Spätburgunder opens with a dry and woody, quite toasty but fresh and elegant bouquet of ripe dark berries and red cherries. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is an aromatic, round and juicy, nicely balanced Pinot Noir with remarkably fine tannins and a fine, crystalline and saline finish. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

Dark cherry, wild raspberry, violets, and a firm mineral spine. Tannins are precise and fine-grained; the finish is long and slightly earthy with real depth.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
