Half a hectare of very old vines high on the Gevrey-Chambertin slope, made by one of the Cote de Nuits' most closely watched growers. Amelie Berthaut was born into vineyard-owning families on both sides, her father's Berthaut holdings in Fixin and her mother's Gerbet parcels down in Vosne-Romanee, and she has folded them into a single domaine that she farms and vinifies herself, ploughing some of the smaller plots by horse. Combe du Dessus sits in the cooler upper reaches of Gevrey above the village, and the vines there date back to her grandfather's day; roughly 10% of the fruit goes in whole cluster and the wine sees about 20% new oak. 2022 looked like it might be another baking, drought-stressed year until well-timed rain rescued the season, and the wines came in ripe but restrained, under 13% natural alcohol. The result is silky and elegant rather than muscular, open enough to enjoy now with a decant but better still in five years.

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe du Dessus, once part of Berthaut's Gevrey Village, is very understated on the nose yet well-defined with subtle aromas of wild strawberries, cranberries, sous-bois and dried rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. Very elegant and poised, actually reminiscent of a Rousseau in many ways. Gently caressing on the finish. This will drink early and will be difficult to resist." —Neal Martin

More about Berthaut-Gerbet

Amélie Berthaut returned to her native Fixin at the top of the Côte de Nuits in 2013 and brought together her mother's and father's family vineyards under one label. The domaine now comprises 13 hectares across the top villages of the Côte de Nuits, including a first-rate premier cru in Vosne-Romanée. Amélie makes wines that are delicate and complex, farming organically and bottling with the kind of precision that speaks of genuine understanding. This is Burgundy kept in the family and made even better for it.
