“Casteel” represents the pinnacle of Bethel Heights’ production—a barrel-by-barrel selection from their best estate vines in the Eola-Amity Hills. With own-rooted Pinot Noir planted in volcanic Nekia and Jory soils, the wine reflects the tension and detail that define the Willamette Valley’s best sites.

The 2022 vintage was long and even, offering purity of fruit without excess. The wine is vibrant yet restrained: red cherry, crushed raspberry, forest floor, and a mineral core shaped by fine tannins and bright acidity. Whole-cluster fermentation and gentle oak aging add complexity without overtaking the fruit. It's a wine that unfolds slowly and will reward patience.

Drink with a decant now, or cellar comfortably for 10–15 years. For collectors and Pinot lovers who seek energy, elegance, and sense of place, Casteel 2022 is a reference-point wine from one of Oregon’s most thoughtful producers.

There's a reason the Willamette Valley has become synonymous with Pinot Noir produced in the United States, and Bethel Heights makes some of the best-- not to mention incredible Chardonnays as well!

In 1977 the Casteel family bought 75 acres of promising looking land northwest of Salem, which has now grown to over 100 acres. Since their first commercial vintage in 1984 the wine has always been produced by the Casteel family, with patriarch Terry at the helm until 2006, when his son Ben took over as winemaker.

The land has been the family's home for nearly 40 years and they treat it with the love and respect you'd expect: they are certified sustainable and on the forefront of the Willamette's eco-friendly practices.

This commitment to the land, in conjunction with the perfectly suited terroir, results in some spectacular wines (both red and white). The Casteels pride themselves on terroir-driven wines, and in fact all but one of the Pinots they produce are named after a place. This is also the reason they grow Chardonnay: it expresses the terroir perfectly.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 96
"Youthfully shy and takes plenty of air to reveal intoxicating scents of pomegranate liqueur, blackberry jam, Earl Grey tea leaves and earth. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful! It offers generous layers of dark fruit, earth and spice, gaining purity as it airs in the glass. It's structured by fine, chalky tannins and mouthwatering acidity and has a long, floral and spice-laced finish."
