Les Rugiens-Bas is widely considered Pommard's finest terroir, the parcel many argue deserves grand cru status. Domaine Billard-Gonnet has farmed here since 1766, working in open vats with hand punch-downs and bottling without fining or filtration. The iron-rich soils produce a dense, structured wine that needs years to unwind. The 2010 was a small, concentrated, classically built vintage, and this bottle still has the backbone to reward more cellaring even as it enters a fine drinking window.

Burghound

"A more elegant and cooler nose of very ripe red cherries, plum, stone and a hint of the sauvage introduces intensely mineral-driven, energetic and beautifully well-delineated flavors that brim with an abundance of dry extract. There is a hallmark austerity to the sappy and impeccably well-balanced finish that, like the Chaponnières, is clearly built for the very long haul. If you can find it, this is absolutely one to buy but please remember that this is expressly meant to age." —Allen Meadows

"Billard-Gonnet’s 2010 Pommard Rugiens Bas is a delicious starting point for our reds tonight. There is a lovely immediacy to the fruit in this supple, juicy, early-drinking Pommard." —Antonio Galloni
