Taillepieds is one of Volnay's finest premier crus, and Bitouzet-Prieur - long a Rosenthal staple since 1978 - farms it for the kind of perfumed, mineral, ageworthy Pinot the appellation is famous for. The name means roughly "cut feet," a nod to the steep, stony slope of limestone and active marl that gives these wines their tension and lift. The 2010 vintage is a benchmark for the Cote de Beaune: classically structured, beautifully balanced reds built to age. Now entering its mature stride, this should be showing the silky, savory complexity that makes top Volnay so rewarding.

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur sits in the heart of Volnay, born from the marriage of Vincent Bitouzet and Ann Prieur, combining their family's vineyard holdings. Today, Francois Bitouzet works alongside his parents, maintaining organic viticulture with techniques like sexual confusion to reduce insect pressure. Their Passetoutgrains—two-thirds old-vine Pinot Noir, one-third Gamay from a single vineyard plot—receives proper élevage in used barrels. This is lovely, complex Burgundy that delivers sheer pleasure without pretension.
