Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is another terrific wine from Brezza. Readers should expect a relatively stern Cannubi, a Barolo that emphasizes structure and tension over the sensuality that is such a signature of this site. Time in the glass brings out scents of dried rose petal, espresso, mint, dried herbs and crushed autumn leaves. This will be especially fine if the tannins soften." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The organic Brezza 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a delicate and finely textured Nebbiolo with earthy aromas, dried cherry and crushed flowers. That earthy note ties into a savory side of tobacco and warm spice. The open-knit fruit is balanced, and the wine concludes with silky tannins that are resolved even at this young stage in the wine's life. You can drink this Barolo straight out of the gate. That immediacy is becoming a more common feature with Cannubi fruit, especially in the warm vintages. Winemaking sees 10 months in stainless steel followed by 24 months in Slavonian oak casks." —Monica Larner

"From Barolo's most revered vineyard comes a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility. The nose reveals sun-warmed strawberries and perfectly baked cherry tart, woven through with dried herbs and subtle earthen tones. The palate unfolds with vibrant rhubarb tang and freshly made mixed berry preserves, while precise acidity courses through like a silver thread. Already showing glimpses of evolution, the wine balances primary fruit with emerging secondary complexity. The palate is pure aristocracy, structured yet seamless, showcasing why Cannubi has been treasured for centuries. Here is completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure." —Jeff Porter

"From the historic heart of this celebrated vineyard site, the compelling 2021 Cannubi from Brezza shows all the class and pedigree that has made this site famous. It opens with heady aromas recalling woodland berry, crushed wild rose, hay, anise and whiffs of new leather and crushed mint. Full-bodied and still youthfully austere, the elegantly structured palate delivers juicy red cherry, pomegranate, licorice and white pepper set against tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity provides balance and energy. Hold for even more complexity. An absolute stunner. Drink 2031–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.
