2020 is the first vintage in which Cantenac Brown's "Grand Cabernet Sauvignon" from the plateau of Margaux goes into BriO — a meaningful upgrade for what is already one of the more serious second wines in the commune. BriO isn't a dumping ground for declassified lots; the estate builds it from a specific selection of parcels within the Third Growth's vineyards, a Merlot-led red blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of Cabernet Franc, given a light hand on new oak (usually around 20%) so the fruit and Margaux perfume stay in front. Since the Le Lous family took over, the estate says it has rethought everything from the vine to the bottle, and 2020 shows the effect: fermentations run considerably cooler than usual to capture aromatics without pushing tannin. Harvest stretched from Merlot picked in the second and third weeks of September to Cabernet Sauvignon brought in at the very end of the month under generous sun. The house calls its 2020s "A Beautiful Sensory Parenthesis," which is marketing, but the intent behind it is honest — this is a charming, drinkable Margaux for sharing rather than a wine that asks you to wait a decade. Remarkable quality for the price by classed-growth standards.
