This wine from Guillaume Camus showcases one of Burgundy's greatest bargains in red wine. Chorey-lès-Beaune sits on gently rolling clay-limestone slopes just north of Beaune, where the Camus family has been making wine since the 18th century. The 2023 reveals mineral dark fruits on the nose with good concentration and purity—raised in a mix of 500-liter and 228-liter casks with 20% new oak. While Chorey may lack the prestige cache of neighboring appellations, Camus-Bruchon's version is fleshy, complex, and deeply satisfying from release, offering the kind of accessible structure and elegance that made this family's wines legendary among French restaurant sommeliers.

"The 2023 Chorey-lès-Beaune Le Grand Saussy was vinified with 30% whole bunch and 25% new oak. The stems are well integrated on the nose—hardly noticeable and allowing the red fruit to shine. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine balance and well-judged acidity toward the finish. This is a "useful" Chorey-lès-Beaune." —Neal Martin

More about Camus-Bruchon

Guillaume Camus is one of the most sure-handed winemakers in the Côte de Beaune, based in Savigny-les-Beaune rather than the famous villages that command premium prices. His Chorey-lès-Beaune 'Le Grand Saussy' is fleshy and complex from the start, and it's one of the great bargains in red Burgundy. Hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, the fruit comes from organically farmed vines, and the result is brilliant wine at genuinely accessible prices. Chorey-lès-Beaune is the last bastion of affordable red Burgundy, and Camus-Bruchon is the reason.
