Traditional Barbaresco from a tiny estate on Strada Bernino that flies criminally under the radar. Cascina Morassino was founded in 1984 by Mauro Bianco and is now run by his son Roberto, working just 4.5 hectares across Barbaresco's Ovello sub-zone and a small parcel in Neive. The Morassino bottling is the family's home wine, named for the cascina itself — Nebbiolo aged roughly a year in large old casks, kept honest and transparent, with nothing to hide behind. 2019 was the vintage Piedmont traditionalists had been waiting for: a late-budding, unhurried season with cool September nights, harvest running into October, moderate alcohol and firm, well-formed tannins. That combination suits this house style exactly, giving a Barbaresco that is perfumed and lifted now but built to reward a decade in the cellar. A purist's bottle from a family that has been quietly making serious wine in Barbaresco for decades.

Wine Enthusiast

90 points

"Still tightly closed and primary, this has aromas of forest floor, leather and rose. On the tight, racy palate, vigorous acidity accompanies sour cherry, cranberry and star anise alongside taut tannins. Give it time to fully come together." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Classic Piemontese fare — brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and truffle, mushroom risotto, osso buco. Also excellent with aged hard cheeses or a roast leg of lamb.

Tasting Profile

Pale ruby and deeply perfumed — rose petal, dried cherry, woodland strawberry, sweet tobacco, and a thread of tar. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity and fine, sappy Nebbiolo tannins that still have some grip. Long, savory finish; decant it, or wait.
