An island white from Ischia, the volcanic island off the coast of Naples formed by a volcano that last erupted in 1302, made from a grape that has adapted to that volcanic habitat over centuries. Pasquale Cenatiempo calls what he does viticoltura eroica — heroic viticulture — and he means it literally: fourteen tiny terraced vineyards above the Gulf of Naples, farmed organically with biodynamic practice, where nothing can be mechanized and everything happens by hand. This bottling is 100% Forastera from the commune of Lacco Ameno, grown on west-facing terraces trained in the traditional Ischian spalliera system, fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged there too — no skin contact, no oak, nothing between you and the volcano. Forastera is naturally high in acid and low in alcohol, which makes this one of the more useful whites you can own in warm weather. Pasquale's father Francesco founded the winery in 1945; three thousand years of winemaking on Ischia stand behind it, and almost none of it makes economic sense.

Perfect Pairings

Made for the Bay of Naples: fritto misto, spaghetti alle vongole, grilled branzino with lemon, anchovies on buttered bread, mozzarella di bufala with olive oil, or a coniglio all'ischitana. Also excellent with oysters and raw bar.

Tasting Profile

Dry and light-bodied, with aromas of lemon peel, green herbs and a smoky, mineral edge from the volcanic soil. Racy, nervous acidity runs through the middle, and the alcohol is low, so it drinks light and brisk. The finish is salty and clean rather than fruity. Serve well chilled.
