Australian Nero d'Avola essentially starts with this family: the Chalmers vine nursery brought the Sicilian grape into the country in 2000, as part of a shipment of some 70 Italian varieties and clones that had never been available here before. Their own fruit comes from Colbinabbin in Heathcote, Victoria, an east-facing block planted in 2009 at 210 to 220 metres over a jumble of ironstone, dolerite, green basalt, shale and quartz. A cooler-than-average summer in 2023 stretched ripening out, and the winemaking stays out of the way: hand-picked, destemmed to whole berries, wild-fermented in stainless steel, six months in tank, no oak, no fining or filtration. At 13.2% it reads much closer to a crunchy Mediterranean red than an Australian blockbuster, and twenty minutes in the fridge does it a favor.
