The second wine of Chateau Haut-Brion in 2005, the vintage that paired opulent ripeness with unusually firm structure, which is why this bottle still has road ahead of it. Bahans draws on the same vineyard as the grand vin: deep Gunzian gravel, more than three metres of it in places, over clay and sand in Pessac, where the heat those stones hold and the city that has grown up around the property make it one of the earliest-ripening addresses in Bordeaux. It is the usual Pessac blend of Merlot and the two Cabernets, and the label itself is now a piece of history, since from the 2007 vintage the wine was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion. Twenty-one years on, the dark, chocolatey fruit of the vintage is giving way to the smoke and crushed stone of the site, and the tannins have turned velvety. It is ready, but there is no rush: decant and enjoy over the next decade.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2005 Bahans Haut-Brion might have begun its slow decline. Here, at 20 years of age, it does possess a lovely bouquet with peppermint-tinged red fruit that has real exuberance and vivacity. So far, so good. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, perhaps a little more rustic than the La Chapelle de la Mission, and I notice that more dryness now encroaches on the finish. Perfectly enjoyable, but I would drink sooner rather than later. Tasted at the château." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"An absolutely sensational second wine from Haut-Brion, the 2005 Bahans Haut-Brion displays all the smoke, gravel and chocolate notes along with ripe black fruits. Broad, savory, rich and lush, this is a sensational wine (now called Le Clarence) with gorgeous texture and length. Drink it over the next 10-15 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

"Soft and balanced, showing lovely velvety tannins and lots of coffee, chocolate, toasty oak and mushroom character, with bright fruit underneath. Full-bodied, round and unctuous. The second wine of Haut-Brion. Best after 2013."

Wine Enthusiast

"The second wine of Chateau Haut-Brion is firm, mirroring its grand vin. It is dark, brooding and dense, rounded by ripe fruits. There is also an edge of bitter chocolate that offers an intriguing counterpoint to the elegance of the fruit."
