Certan de May is one of Pomerol's historic small estates — five hectares perched on the high plateau alongside Vieux Château Certan and Pétrus, in Barreau family hands for generations. The plot is planted to 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines averaging around 50 years on a famous mix of clay and gravel. 2005 was an extraordinary Pomerol vintage, and twenty years on this wine is finally in its drinking window with significant upside still ahead. The Cab Franc gives it a savory, perfumed lift unusual for Pomerol, and the great Right Bank clay shows in the silkiness — black cherry, plum, espresso, iron, and the truffle that only old-vine plateau Pomerol delivers.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"Deep red. Initially sauvage aromas of plum, leather, game and earth, with higher-pitched blueberry and blackberry emerging with aeration. Sweet, concentrated and densely packed, with a youthfully medicinal character to the dark fruit flavors. Finishes with firm, dusty tannins. Impressively constituted but seems less pure than it was from barrel the spring after the harvest. This will need a good seven or eight years of cellaring. (A second bottle, which I liked far less, was distinctly wilder on the nose and more leathery in the mouth, finishing with drying tannins.)" —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

95 points

"This great terroir sandwiched between Vieux Château Certan, Petrus and La Fleur Petrus, on the high plateau of Pomerol, has been owned for many years by the Barrau-Badar family. Beautiful coffee, cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit jump from the glass of this full-bodied, rich, multi-layered, and very impressive Certan de May. I don’t remember it showing this well in barrel and post-bottling, but it is strutting its stuff at age 10, and has a good 20 years of upside left to it. This is a beauty. I especially admire the layered, textural style of the wine. Drink it over the next 20 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"Dark rusty crimson. Richly scented with even a hint of oak - most unusual on a Moueix wine. Very intense aromas, not especially fruity. Sweet start and very silky texture. Fresh finish. Quite brisk and palate-cleansing. Very slightly astringent on the finish." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Blackberry and green tobacco aromas, with hints of coffee bean, follow through to a full body, with big, velvety tannins and a complex finish of dark chocolate and berry. Chewy and muscular, yet caressing and pretty. Best after 2015. 2,000 cases made."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"A hugely perfumed wine with smooth tannins. It's impressively ripe, with vibrant black fruits."
