Three hectares, one family since 1890, and some vines pushing eighty years old — Clos Junet is the kind of small Saint-Émilion property that gets overlooked simply because there is not much of it. Patrick Junet farms limestone, chalk, sand and clay, and blends roughly two-thirds Merlot with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Malbec, which is an increasingly rare sight on the Right Bank. Fermentation is in stainless steel, and the wine spends fifteen months in French oak, about half of it new. 2022 was a hot, dry, drought-marked year that nonetheless produced surprisingly fresh wines on Saint-Émilion's limestone, where the subsoil held water in reserve. This is generous and open-framed — approachable now with an hour in a decanter, and happy in the cellar for the better part of a decade.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2022 Clos Junet is packed with blackberry, espresso, licorice, new leather, incense and chocolate. This bold, luscious Saint-Emilion is all charm."

Robert Parker

92 points

"Notes of cassis, dark wild berries and spices mingled with floral notes preface the 2022 Clos Junet, a medium to full-bodied, dense and layered wine framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, dark berries-inflected finish. Charming and polished, this is a great effort." —Yohan Castaing

"Gorgeous aromatics, so expressive and alive, deep, dark, seductive, blackcurrant, black cherry and cola. Rich and layered, but cool and so fresh - a quiet confidence, clearly concentrated but so well worked. Gorgeous detail and purity, tannins are full and filling but so fine, really giving a firm structure to the wine that balances the fruit richness. Smooth and supple, this has an excellent energy and focus, but still with power and depth and I just love the milk chocolate, slightly spiced, cola and vanilla and clove elements you get from the old-vine Cabernet Franc. Structured and confident, this will be lovely to drink. Still tense now, but lovely potential and nuance. A yield of 40hl/ha. Contains grapes from an old parcel of Cabernet Franc at more than 70 years old."

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb, steak au poivre, duck breast with cherries, or a mushroom risotto. Also good with a hard sheep's-milk cheese.

Tasting Profile

Ripe black cherry and plum with cocoa, sweet spice and a little cedar from the oak. Medium- to full-bodied and round, with supple tannins and enough limestone-driven freshness to keep it lively. Warm, plush finish.
