L'Extravagant is the wild experiment of Doisy-Daene, a Second Growth Barsac estate, dreamed up by the late Denis Dubourdieu, one of the most influential white-wine minds in Bordeaux history. It is a tiny-production cuvee, roughly 100 cases when made at all, drawn from the most intensely botrytized fruit on the estate's limestone-rich Barsac terroir, with sugar levels nearly double those of the regular Sauternes. The result is concentration bordering on the absurd, yet electrified by Barsac acidity so it never cloys. This is a half-bottle of the 2003, a famously hot, ripe vintage that suits the cuvee's over-the-top style. A connoisseur's dessert wine, sweet but precise.

Robert Parker

99 points

"Space limitations preclude including tasting notes. 2003 is a rich, sweet vintage of powerful, full-bodied wines that possess huge levels of glycerin, alcohol, and residual sugar." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Doesn't give much on the nose, with subtle lemon, honey, tangerine and apricot. Full-bodied and very sweet, with a long finish. Thick and compacted, with loads of mango and sweet candied fruit. Best after 2010."

More about Chateau Doisy Daene

Sauternes with personality. The Dubourdieu family has owned this 18.2-hectare Barsac since 1924, making both rich sweet wines and—innovatively—a dry white. 65% new French oak, indigenous yeast, complexity for years. A thinking person's Sauternes.
