Classic Médoc claret from one of the Haut-Médoc's six village appellations — Moulis sits alongside Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Listrac, but without their price tags, which is exactly why we keep an eye on it. This is a Cabernet-and-Merlot blend, and it drinks like proper old-school claret rather than a fruit bomb. The estate was classified Cru Bourgeois back in 1932 and its clay-limestone and sandy-gravel soils are a big part of the character here. Philippe Ferrier bought the property in 2015 — his parents were winegrowers, so this was a return to his roots — and set about a complete overhaul of both vines and cellars from 2015, with his wife Brigitte and daughter Crystelle rebuilding the buildings. Fun bit of history: the place traces back to Cardinal Richelieu's family and began life as a hunting rendezvous, and in the 18th century his great-nephew made its wine famous at the court of Louis XV under the name "la tisane de Richelieu" — Richelieu's herbal tea — at a moment when Versailles was drinking Burgundy and Champagne. A lot of story for what is, at heart, a well-made, honest bottle of Bordeaux.
