2016 is the vintage this estate had been building toward for thirty years. Lagrange has been Japanese-owned since 1983, when Suntory bought a run-down Third Growth from the Cendoya family and handed it to Marcel Ducasse for a long, unglamorous restoration; Matthieu Bordes has run the estate since 2013 and has kept tightening the selection. The 2016 blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot from a season of drought followed by relieving mid-September rain, which is the combination that produces Left Bank wines with ripe, grainy tannins and startling freshness at the same time. This is the muscular, graphite-and-iron end of Saint-Julien rather than the perfumed end, and it is still young. Decant it two hours if you open one now; better to leave it until the 2030s, and it should run well into the 2040s.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Lagrange has a tightly knit, focused bouquet of intense blackberry, briar and cedar aromas. This is impressive, and it gains intensity with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a vivacious, spicy, almost peppery finish. One of the most powerful Lagrange that I have tasted. A Saint-Julien that is consistently underrated, this 2016 will give a great deal of pleasure over the next 30-plus years." —Vinous

Robert Parker

95 points

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Lagrange sashays out of the glass with notions of candied violets, cassis, underbrush and warm black plums with waves of Black Forest cake, cedar chest and yeast extract scents. Medium to full-bodied, the bags of perfumed black fruits are solidly structured with super ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and layered."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A textbook St.-Julien, with a fleshy yet focused beam of plum, blueberry and cassis flavors striding through, while warmed anise, sweet tobacco and iron notes play backup through the finish. Mouthwatering grip will allow this to cellar nicely."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"Surprisingly light for the vintage, this is an attractive, black-currant-flavored wine. It is open, with tannins integrate easily into the fruitiness. All this suggests the wine will age relatively quickly, so drink from 2024."
