What is this wine?
Château Lagrange’s Saint-Julien 2016 is a superb Grand Cru Classé from one of the Médoc’s most consistent and well-regarded estates. The blend—typically around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot—comes from gravelly, well-drained soils that produce wines of power and precision. Aged for about 18–20 months in French oak (roughly 60% new), the 2016 vintage represents both the strength of a great year and Lagrange’s signature refinement under the direction of winemaker Matthieu Bordes.

Why get this wine?
2016 is considered one of Bordeaux’s finest modern vintages, combining ripeness, balance, and structure. Château Lagrange excelled, crafting a wine that rivals more famous neighbors at a fraction of the price. With its purity of fruit, polished tannins, and impressive longevity, this bottle captures the essence of classic Saint-Julien—poised, deep, and effortlessly elegant.

What does this wine taste like?
Concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, and violet, backed by cedar, graphite, and a hint of spice. The palate is full-bodied and layered, with ripe fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Long, focused, and impeccably balanced on the finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Decant an hour before serving to open its bouquet. Enjoy now for its youthful vibrancy or cellar through 2040 for peak maturity. Perfect with roast lamb, beef, or hearty stews.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Lagrange has a tightly knit, focused bouquet of intense blackberry, briar and cedar aromas. This is impressive, and it gains intensity with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a vivacious, spicy, almost peppery finish. One of the most powerful Lagrange that I have tasted. A Saint-Julien that is consistently underrated, this 2016 will give a great deal of pleasure over the next 30-plus years." —Vinous

Robert Parker

95 points

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Lagrange sashays out of the glass with notions of candied violets, cassis, underbrush and warm black plums with waves of Black Forest cake, cedar chest and yeast extract scents. Medium to full-bodied, the bags of perfumed black fruits are solidly structured with super ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and layered."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A textbook St.-Julien, with a fleshy yet focused beam of plum, blueberry and cassis flavors striding through, while warmed anise, sweet tobacco and iron notes play backup through the finish. Mouthwatering grip will allow this to cellar nicely."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"Surprisingly light for the vintage, this is an attractive, black-currant-flavored wine. It is open, with tannins integrate easily into the fruitiness. All this suggests the wine will age relatively quickly, so drink from 2024."
