Saint-Estèphe can demand respect through power, but this 2015 invites you to savor complexity instead. Les Ormes-de-Pez earned Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel designation by performing at Cru Classé level—blackcurrants and blackberries weave together with earthy leaf notes, espresso depth, and dusty structured tannins. The 2015 is notably Merlot-forward (49%) with Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot from the village of Pez on gravel over sand and clay. A decade of aging has softened its edges while the core remains muscular. Serious Bordeaux quality at this price is rare.

"The 2015 Ormes de Pez is impeccable. Dark, pliant and inviting, the 2015 has much to recommend it. Smoke, graphite, licorice, lavender, herb and licorice nuances add complexity to this dark, virile Saint-Estèphe. All the elements are very nicely balanced. I would prefer to drink the 2015 over the next decade or so. I suspect the tannins will always remain a bit chunky, but the 2015 has so much to recommend it." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Ormes de Pez is medium garnet-purple colored with an earthy, rubbery nose offering vague aromas of tar and black fruits plus herbal hints in the background. The palate is equally reduced, and while this would be somewhat forgivable at this early stage, it is also hard, lean, hollow and pretty green." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Good crunchy fruit that is more polished than in the past. A classic, harmonious and modern wine."

More about Chateau Les Ormes-de-Pez

Les Ormes de Pez is Saint-Estèphe with Lynch-Bages manners. It belongs to the Cazes family of Pauillac, who make it with the same care as their famous estate, and it gives you the commune's firm, gravelly backbone in a polished, generous frame.

The property has been part of the Médoc landscape since the eighteenth century, when it was called the Domaine de Pez, and it passed through a long line of owners before Jean-Charles Cazes bought it in 1940. Jean-Michel Cazes restored and modernized the old buildings in the early 1980s, and the family has since turned the house into a guest house. The name comes from the elms (ormes) that grew on the estate until the 1950s; they have appeared on the label since 2003.

The vineyard, about 40 hectares beside the hamlet of Pez in the north of the commune, follows the traditional Médoc mix: mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Cabernet grows on gravel of quartz and rolled pebbles, the Merlot on cooler sandy clay. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel, and the wine is aged for about 15 months in French oak, part of it new.

Expect dark fruit, a savory iron-and-graphite edge and the stamina to age gracefully for well over a decade.
