A mature bottle of Petrus, the wine that made Pomerol famous without any classification to lean on. Pomerol has no classed growths — no 1855 hierarchy, no official ranking of any kind — so Petrus climbed to the top of Bordeaux's price lists on reputation alone, built on a Merlot-dominated vineyard of barely eleven hectares on the plateau's highest ground. What sets the site apart is the clay: a band of iron-rich blue clay, and the whole vineyard sits on top of it, which is why the wine has always tasted denser and more velvety than its neighbours. The Moueix family, who also hold Trotanoy and La Fleur-Pétrus, have run it for decades, and they bottle only a grand vin — everything that doesn't make the cut is declassified. This is a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar, and at this age Petrus is less about power than about the texture and perfume that only time gives. Store it upright for a day or two, decant gently, and pour it for people who will pay attention.

Robert Parker

"This is the kind of wine that I bought at a high price, and every bottle I have tasted from a six-bottle allocation has been increasingly disappointing. The wine still has its admirers, particularly Michael Broadbent, who continues to find it virtually perfect. Either we have different palates or we are tasting different wine, but this wine now has a medium ruby color with considerable amber at the edge. The nose smells like fresh vegetable market, with spice box, celery seed, fennel all there, along with a hint of tobacco and Provencal herbs. There is sweet cherry fruit there, but the weediness dominates everything. In the mouth, the wine is light, medium-bodied, and fading. This is a wine to taste with the label clearly in front of you, to think of other Petrus vintages as opposed to what is in the 1985. Caveat emptor." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Dark vibrant blackish ruby. Heady and immediately glamorous nose. Straight from the magnum a bit austere though with no shortage of density. Briary. Not as luscious and sweet and many Petrus vintages are but utterly in character for E P-R. I suspect he would have approved of this rather Medocain rendition. Impressive on the finish. Needs to open out a bit. Two hours later from the decanter: Gloriously rich and expansive and much more typically Petrus. A very rewarding Pomerol with a combination of sweetness and lifted leafiness. Not the most opulent vintage but extremely satisfying. Note the alcohol level"

"Another superb bottle from Pétrus. Solid as a rock with mint, raspberry, cherry and tar character, full body and firm tannins."

Flatiron's Take

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or duck breast with cherries; beef tenderloin with morels; a simple rib of beef with bone marrow; aged Comté or Saint-Nectaire at the end of the meal. Nothing too aggressively seasoned — this is a wine to cook around, not compete with.

Tasting Profile

Merlot-driven and full-bodied but not heavy, with the plush, almost silky texture the estate's clay is known for. Expect a mature red rather than fresh fruit. Decant carefully; there will be sediment.
