Pauillac made by the Pichon Baron team, on seventeen hectares of gravel just north of the village. AXA Millesimes bought Pibran in 1987, replanted and rebuilt it, added the neighboring La Tour Pibran in 2001, and has run it under Christian Seely with the same technical crew that makes Pichon Baron. The house style here is unusually Merlot-heavy for the appellation, but 2021 flipped the script: a cool, late, genuinely classical vintage in which Cabernet Sauvignon came in best, so the blend is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon to 37% Merlot, aged around a year in half-new French oak. The result is the opposite of a hot-vintage Pauillac - medium-bodied, crisp, lifted, with red fruit and pencil lead rather than dense black fruit. That makes it a Pauillac you can actually open for a Tuesday roast; it will drink well now and through the early 2030s.

Robert Parker

89 points

"The 2021 Pibran opens in the glass with notes of sweet cassis, red berries and pencil shavings, followed by a medium-bodied, deep and structured palate that's pure and flavorful, with lively acids and chalky tannins that reflect the blend's unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. It's one 2021 that will reward a little patience." —William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

"Bright pink-crimson. Rather sumptuous nose. Then marked acidity on the palate and light tannins. Super-fresh with a little sweetness of fruit. Just a tad tart and light but you can sense the strain of winemaking effort!"

Decanter

"Gorgeous florally, so sweet and welcoming. Lightly framed, delicate but fun and playful. Sweet purple flowers. Smooth, sweet but also sour, the succulent and creamy chalkiness is lovely. A nice balance between the sweet fruit, the floral flowers and the freshness. Tannins are so fine and integrated. Such easy drinking, still with quite a vein and backbone of the spiced minerality - really long length. ItÕs gentle with this depth of flavour and intensity of perfume while still being light but the spice also gives depth. A lot going on here, with this lick of stone and graphite, dark chocolate and clove. Ageing 40% in new barrels and 60% from barrels of one vintage." —Georgina Hindle

Wine Enthusiast

"Ripe blackberry aromas with rich tannins give the wine structure. Almost half and half Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is both juicy, generous and full of succulent black fruits. Drink from 2027." —Roger Voss
