"Raymond-Lafon is a name to watch in the Sauternes district, particularly if one is looking for a wine that is close to the brilliance and majestic richness of Yquem for less than one-third the price. This small estate abuts Yquem's vineyard and has an excellent reputation." The estate of Raymond-Lafon fell into neglect, and it was not until 1972 that Pierre Meslier, the manager of Yquem, purchased this vineyard and began to rebuild this wine's once fabulous reputation. With a tiny yield of 9 hectoliters per hectare (even less than Yquem's), with the same grape blend and winemaking techniques employed as Yquem, and with the same ruthless selection procedure (normally 20% - 100% of a harvest is declassified), Raymond-Lafon is once again producing a succession of splendid Sauternes!"

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 89
"Pale gold color. Lively but rather unforthcoming aromas of caraway seed, rye, grapefruit skin and fennel; brightened by a floral quality. Fresh and bright in the mouth, but not especially thick or concentrated. Still, the flavors are sharply etched. Finishes slightly harsh. Very good but not outstanding." -Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

RP 92
"The 1988 possesses an opulent, full-bodied, exotic, lavishly rich personality, moderate sweetness, and huge quantity of extract, glycerin, and alcohol in its finish. The wine is also extremely young and unevolved. The 1988 offers a refined aromatic profile and tight structure. It can be drunk now, but purchasers are advised to wait until the turn of the century and enjoy it over the following two decades." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.
