This Saint-Émilion estate has vines right beside those of Château Magdelaine and Château Ausone, and most Bordeaux lovers have never heard of it, simply because there's so little of it. Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie farms about five hectares on the Pavie hillside, on clay-limestone over a molasse subsoil, and makes only a few hundred cases a year. The vineyard is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The soil is ploughed and worked the traditional way. The family has always worked with wood: for generations the Charoulets of Corrèze split oak into barrel staves and shipped it down the Dordogne to Libourne; Jules Charoulet bought this estate in 1873. The 2009 was made while his great-grandson Jacques Masson was in charge. If you want a Saint-Émilion from next door to some very famous addresses without paying for a famous name, this is one to know about.
