The most famous unclassified chateau in the Medoc, now with a decade of age on it. Sociando-Mallet sits on a gravel rise at Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, about ten kilometers north of Pauillac in a corner of the Medoc that the 1855 classification simply overlooked, and its late owner Jean Gautreau spent fifty years making a point: he refused to submit the wine for classification, convinced it didn't need the label. Most Bordeaux drinkers quietly agree. The gravel-and-clay soils over clay-limestone, the near-even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the high proportion of new oak add up to a claret built with the structure and seriousness of a classed growth. 2014 was rescued by a superb, sunny September and October that ripened Left Bank Cabernet late, and the wine that resulted is classically proportioned and fresh rather than opulent. At a decade on it is opening nicely but still firm; decant it, give it air, and put something roasted next to it.

"The 2014 Sociando Mallet shows a lot of vanillary new oak on the nose. It seemed out of proportion to the fruit, so it feels seductive but lacks typicité. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin: tarry black fruit, sea salt and cracked black pepper that define its assertive finish. This showed promise straight after bottling but here, I found it difficult to see how it will evolve. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting."

The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin, a silver bead of acidity and superb focus towards the finish. The energy here is superb and it tempts you back immediately for another sip.
