A charmingly pure blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay that goes through carbonic maceration in cement and is bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added — this has been one of our favorite Cheverny reds for more than a decade. Christian Venier farms around seven hectares near Cande-sur-Beuvron, organically and without certification; his mother and the Puzelats' father were siblings, and he and Thierry Puzelat got into natural wine together around 1990. Les Hauts de Madon is the upper part of the Madon site, flinty clay over rocky subsoil, and that is where the wine gets its cool mineral snap. 2025 in the Loire was hot and very early, with moderate volumes and reds that came in ripe but well defined. Serve it cool — this is a light red that improves out of the fridge.
