Clos Saint-André is one of the smallest estates in all of Pomerol, a single hectare run as a one-man show by Jean-Claude Desmarty. Vines were first planted here in 1923 by his great-grandmother Alice Desmarty, who sold her wines to local merchants as part of a polyculture farm. Jean-Claude is the first in the family to bottle estate Pomerol under the Clos Saint-André name, beginning with the 2004 vintage, and he calls himself a gardener rather than a viticulteur: every vine is worked by hand with no mechanical help. The 2019 is a beautifully crafted Right Bank in a strong vintage, all dark plum and violet over Pomerol's signature iron-clay grip. Six years on, it is just beginning to open and has plenty of road ahead.

Tasting Profile

Merlot-driven and plush, with dark plum, black cherry, violet, and cocoa over Pomerol's signature iron-tinged clay frame. Ripe but composed 2019, with fine-grained tannins, gentle savory spice, and a long, polished finish. Drinking well; will reward another decade.
