Clotilde Legrand holds her wines back rather than pushing them out young, which is why you can buy this Cabernet Franc with the better part of a decade of bottle age already behind it - something almost nobody does at this level of the Loire. La Chaintree is the darker, more structured of her Saumur-Champigny bottlings, aged in 500-liter oak rather than tank, and time has done exactly what it should: the tannins have relaxed and the fruit has picked up tobacco and earth. She farms 16 hectares across twenty parcels around Varrains, vines averaging 45 years old, with cover crops between the rows and hand harvesting throughout, working from cellars cut by hand into the tuffeau. Her neighbors are Roches Neuves, Antoine Sanzay and Clos Rougeard, and the wines have never been priced like it. Drink it now, at cool cellar temperature.

Tasting Profile

Blackcurrant and blueberry giving way to pipe tobacco, dried herbs and damp earth. Medium to full-bodied, with tannins that have gone soft and supple and Cabernet Franc's typical fresh acidity. Savory, earthy finish.
