Fabio Marchionni compares his 2024 to the great Grüner Veltliners of the Wachau, and once you taste it the analogy lands: this is Verdicchio at its most nervy and savory, all citrus and green herbs with no oak anywhere in sight. Matelica sits further inland and higher than the better-known Castelli di Jesi, and where Jesi gives fruit and heft, Matelica gives brightness and cut — Collestefano is the textbook example. Marchionni wrote his agriculture thesis on Verdicchio di Matelica before going to work at Weingut Zähringer in Germany, where he learned to farm organically with minimal impact; he took over the long-held family estate in 1998, though the organic conversion had already begun in 1995 at the Le Prata plot, the first vineyard farmed organically in the area. That plateau below Mount Castel Santa Maria is an unusually windy spot, with the Potenza river gorge pushing hot air upslope in the afternoon and very cold air down at night — the kind of day-to-night swing that keeps a white this taut. Everything happens in stainless steel, with four months on the lees, and yields stay under 40 hl/ha. For an organic white of this quality, it competes with Verdicchios that cost considerably more — one of the great everyday Italian whites, full stop.

Fabio Marchionni wrote his thesis on Verdicchio di Matelica, then spent a decade making wine in Germany learning about organic and biodynamic farming, before returning to Matelica to prove that his obsession made sense. Fourteen hectares at elevation on limestone and clay, farmed organically since day one, consistently earning top recognition from Gambero Rosso. The result tastes inevitable—probably Italy's greatest white wine value, if you can find it.
