Comando G are the duo who convinced the wine world that Garnacha could be delicate, and Las Iruelas is where they push that idea furthest. This is a single site of roughly 60-year-old vines perched around 1,000 meters in the Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid, and unusually for the range it carries slate and schist in the soil rather than pure granite, which gives the wine an extra layer of tension. Fernando Garcia and Daniel Gomez Jimenez-Landi farm it organically and biodynamically, work it by hand and horse, ferment with whole clusters and native yeasts, and age in large neutral vessels so nothing gets in the way of the site. This is old-vine Garnacha built for finesse, not power: pale, perfumed, and lifted. Give it a little air, or lay it down; it will reward patience.

"The 2023 Las Iruelas was marked by a hailstorm in April. It has a paler color (like 2012 and 2017) and a more fragile profile. It comes in at 14% alcohol, a full 1% less than the 2022, and it has very good freshness and reflects the cooler year, with herbal green chili pepper, capers, pine needles, a sensation of Mediterranean forest floor, dry yellow flowers and a core of decayed flowers, with hints of wild strawberries and a peppery twist. It's super fine-boned and mineral and has lots of finesse, with chalky, powdery tannins and a supple, almost salty finish. It's very complete, a notch above Las Umbrías, with finesse and an ethereal character but with lots of energy and oomph. Together with Rumbo al Norte, it's the more homogenous vineyard, showing less differences in quality from year to year. 2,752 bottles produced. It was bottled in March/April 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Comando G

Daniel Jimenez-Landi and Fernando Garcia founded Comando G in 2008 to prove that Grenache grown on granite slopes at high altitude in central Spain could rival Burgundy's Pinot Noir and the Rhône's Syrah. Their Sierra de Gredos vineyards are biodynamically farmed, manually tended, and produce wines of shocking elegance and freshness. They focus on just one grape and it shows.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb, duck breast, mushroom risotto, jamon and aged sheep cheeses, or grilled quail; anything you'd give a fine cru Beaujolais or red Burgundy.

Tasting Profile

Perfumed red fruit, wild herbs, crushed stone, and a floral lift. Light to medium body, silky texture, fine tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral finish.
